The Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) service: Referral

Overview and Contact Information

We are a national specialist service commissioned by NHS England, accepting referrals from throughout the UK and internationally.

Our clinical services are available to adults aged 18 years and over, who have:

  • A suspected or confirmed diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) from a medical professional.
  • Non-resolving moderate, worsening, highly distressing or severe symptoms.
  • Where local services are unavailable or have failed to enable functional improvement.

Exclusions
  • Under 18s. This is an adult service.
  • The CRPS service does NOT offer medical intervention/invasive procedures.
  • Anyone who has not received any pain medication advice yet.
  • Requires acute hospital care.
  • Severe physical or psychological co-morbidities which would impede travel or ability to engage in physical rehab.
Please note that we do not accept urgent referrals.

Referral Guidelines

Referral to the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) service can be made as follows:

Consultant Referrals

Referrals should be received in writing from a medical consultant. Please send written referrals by email or post the address below:

Once a patient has been referred to the service our admin team will contact the registered GP by email to request the supporting information as outlined on this page.

GP Referrals

The service is commissioned to accept GP referrals only if they are submitted via the e-Referral Service (e-RS).

Supporting information

The following information should be presented within the referral letter and notes:

  • The disease duration, the triggering event, the treatment thus far, procedures to date, current therapy and the current problem and the reasons for referral.
  • Copies of all clinical letters from psychological, therapeutic, mental health or psychiatric assessments, interventions or admissions.
  • All correspondence for the past year relating to the patient’s clinical status complete with previous interventions, dates and outcomes including all clinical discharge letters from any previous admissions.
  • All recent reports (eg. MRI, CT, etc)
  • Up to date GP summary

Failure to include or provide this information may result in the referral being declined.

Funding

Prior funding approval is not required for patients living in England.

For people outside of England, local area funding approval will need to be obtained before a referral is submitted.
